This software enables you to maintain a personal wiki of Homer’s Odyssey. Appropriate for both independent research and coursework, this personal wiki lets you keep a custom-annotated version of Odyssey for lifelong study tailored to your educational needs. David Fisco provides this wiki to you free of charge under an open source license.

This wiki offers six translations of Homer’s Odyssey:

  • George Chapman (1616)
  • Alexander Pope (1725)
  • William Cowper (1791)
  • Charles Marie René Leconte de Lisle [French] (1868)
  • Samuel Butler (1900)
  • Samuel Henry Butcher and Andrew Lang (1905)

It also contains Denton J. Snider’s 1895 commentary.

You will need to learn how to use TiddlyWiki, the software on which the Odyssey wiki is based. (TiddlyWiki isn’t too difficult to master.) Since TiddlyWiki runs in most modern browsers, you can use your Web browser to view and edit your personal Odyssey wiki, even when offline. Tablets and smartphones are also supported.

You can take a peek at the Odyssey wiki without downloading it to your machine.

Learning TiddlyWiki

TiddlyWiki is the software underlying the Odyssey wiki. You must learn the basic administration and editing of TiddlyWiki to maximize use of your wiki. I recommend using these resources:

  1. Introduction to TiddlyWiki
A YouTube video from TiddlyWiki’s creator, Jeremy Ruston, giving you an overview of TiddlyWiki
  2. Discover TiddlyWiki
A bit more in-depth introduction to the features of TiddlyWiki
  3. Learning TiddlyWiki
A collection of tiddlers you can use to learn administration and use of TiddlyWiki
  4. WikiText
Information on the markup language you will use to edit tiddlers. WikiText resembles Markdown.

Download your Odyssey wiki

  • .ZIP compressed
Download a compressed version of the wiki. If not already on your computer, you will need .ZIP software to decompress the file.

  • HTML in browser
Open the wiki in a new window or tab in your browser. You will need to use the “Save as…” functionality of your browser to save the HTML file to your desired location in your file system.

Release information

The current version of the Odyssey wiki was released on 6 October 2016. Corrections and additions to the base Odyssey wiki will be posted on this site.

Upgrading TiddlyWiki

You will probably want to upgrade the underlying TiddlyWiki software for your Odyssey wiki. You can upgrade by following the TiddlyWiki upgrade instructions.
